Jemaa El-Fna Square

In 1062, the city was founded by Almoravid Emir Abu Bakr. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of the Almoravids. Marrakech is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco, together with the historical cities of Fez, Meknes, and Rabat. The city is situated on the fertile Tensift-El Haouz, at the foot of the High Atlas, about 327 km from  Rabat and 246 km from Agadir.

Its Medina is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1985. In the heart of the city lies the busiest square in Africa called Jemaa el-Fna. Jemaa el-Fnaa is a square in het middle of the city. The square was built during the reign of Almoravid during the fifth century.  In 2001 Jemaa el-Fna was added to the world heritage site list by UNESCO.

During the day it is occupied by orange juice stalls, water sellers with traditional clothing, snake charmers, storytellers, and musicians. In the evening food stalls take over the square. Around the square are restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy mint tea. Here you walk through small busy streets with colorful shops. About 5 min walk lies the Koutoubia Mosque with its high minaret ( 77m) which can be seen from around the city.

Jemaa el-Fna attracts each year thousands of tourists around the globe. The best time to visit this fabulous square is in the afternoon at 15 o’clock as most activities begin and you don’t need a guide to visit it. By “Chez Hassaan” you can enjoy typical Moroccan food served with bread and mint tea.

According to TripAdvisor, Marrakech is one of the best cities chosen by travelers in 2015. So, if you are looking for a wonderful destination for your holidays the city will be a great choice.
