Hi,

I'm looking for some advice for our upcoming family trip to Marrakech with the kids! We are going to embark on a week-long journey with my trio of little adventurers aged 8, 11, and 15. The plan is to stay in the city of Marrakech for a few days before heading southeast to explore the desert.

Now, there's a bit of a discussion going on about whether Agafay truly offers the desert experience we're looking for. As a solo female traveler with three kiddos, the idea of a three-day trip to the Erg Chebbi Desert sounds a bit challenging. I'm wondering whether it's a good fit for the little ones or if I should save this desert adventure for a longer getaway.

Would really appreciate some insights! If the desert expedition seems too challenging, we're open to the idea of day trips to discover the stunning mountains and valleys instead. I would also know if there are some suggested family-friendly desert tours, we'd love to hear your recommendations!

Thanks for any advice you can share!

Tips for Desert Adventures in Marrakech with Kids

Your family trip to Marrakech sounds thrilling! Traveling with your trio of adventurers is part of the fun. Agafay lacks sand dunes, so it won't offer the full desert experience. Consider a 4-day desert trip for a comfortable and enjoyable experience for your kids. We organize such trips, and families with kids have loved it in the past.

Below is a suggested 4-day itinerary from Marrakech to the desert with kids:

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Gorges

  • Depart Marrakech in the morning and head towards the Dades Gorges, a stunning canyon known for its dramatic rock formations.
  • Enjoy the scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains, stopping at viewpoints along the way.
  • Arrive in the Dades Gorges area and check into your accommodation. Choose a family-friendly hotel or guesthouse.
  • In the afternoon, explore the Dades Gorges on foot, taking in the breathtaking scenery and visiting nearby kasbahs and villages.
  • Overnight in the Dades Gorges area.
  • Day 2: Dades Gorges to Merzouga

    • After breakfast, continue your journey towards Merzouga, home to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes.
    • En route, stop at the Todra Gorges, another impressive canyon worth exploring.
    • Arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon and check into your desert camp. Opt for a family-friendly camp with comfortable amenities.
    • Enjoy camel rides into the desert to witness the sunset over the sand dunes, a memorable experience for kids and adults alike.
    • Dinner and overnight stay at the desert camp.
    • Day 3: Merzouga to Tamsahelte

      • Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the sand dunes, a magical sight not to be missed.
      • After breakfast, bid farewell to the desert camp and embark on a journey to Tamsahelte.
      • Enjoy a picnic lunch in the region of Tazzarine, surrounded by stunning desert landscapes.
      • In the afternoon, continue your journey towards your next destination.
      • Tamsahelte offers a unique opportunity to experience traditional Berber life and hospitality. Explore the village, interact with locals, and learn about their customs and traditions.
      • Overnight stay in Riad Du Sud in Tamsahelte.
      • Day 4: Tamsahelte to Marrakech

        • After breakfast, begin your journey back to Marrakech.
        • Take your time to enjoy the scenic drive, stopping at viewpoints and attractions along the way.
        • Arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, concluding your unforgettable desert adventure with the family.
