It takes a minimum of 3 days to discover some of the most famous Moroccan deserts from Marrakesh, and this is of course for the tourists who want to explore the region in a short time. You will travel through the High Atlas Mountains, which offer stunning mountain views. It is true that the desert is about 561 kilometers from Marrakech through the Dades Valley and 552 kilometers through Agdz (the journey takes about 9 hours), but not many travelers make this trip in one day. If you are traveling by bus, you may have to overnight in Ouarzazate or Tinghir and head to the desert the next day.

Experience the Sahara Desert by 4×4 vehicle

Crossing the desert in a 4×4 vehicle is an exciting and unforgettable experience. And this is perfect for those who are more in search of adventure as this is also a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Sahara desert while driving to one of the most popular Sahara in Morocco like Erg Chegaga. Many tour operators offer various excursions in the desert, such as camel rides or jeep excursions, to explore hidden oases, visit small traditional villages and enjoy an unforgettable sunset on the top of the dunes.

The track that offers more wild landscapes and separates itself from the outside world is Erg Chigaga. Erg Chigaga is located between the desert town of M’hamid and Foum Zguid. Erg Chigaga is a less visited area than the famous Erg Chebbi, perhaps due to the difficulty of access, it can only be reached by 4×4 vehicles and with the help of a local guide.

There are two types of trippers to this fantastic desert – one is trippers who join a guided tour organized by a specialist travel agency, while the other are those who travel with a rented 4×4 car and arrange everything for themselves, from activities to the desert camp. At Erg Chigaga you will have the opportunity to see the changing colors of the dunes and sandboarding, experience a camel ride through the dunes, and enjoy a delicious dinner while gazing at the stars by the campfire.

Famous Marrakech Desert Tour Itinerary

Erg Chebbi is one of the most famous deserts in the country. The height of its sand dunes reaches 150 meters in height. It is located near the town of Merzouga. Most guided tours start with a scenic drive through the mountains and a visit to the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou and a cinema studio in Ouarzazate. Later, heading to Dades Gorge for an overnight stay. The next day the journey continues through the Dades Valley to the Todgha Gorge. From there you will have an amazing view over the valley and be able to walk along the river bank in the gorge which rises up to 400 meters high. Along the way, there are stops for camel rides and scenic views of the sand dunes. Most tour companies include in their tours a one-night stay in one of the luxury desert camps. The camp is equipped with all amenities such as tents, bathrooms, and meals so that you can enjoy your stay comfortably.

The last day of the 3-day desert trip will be a long journey. The full journey, which starts from Merzouga along the Draa Valley and the High Atlas Mountains, takes about 9 hours and covers a total distance of 556 km. If you have more days to spend on a desert trip, it is recommended to do this trip in 4 days.
